The NAFS 08 Performance Calculator

The adoption of NAFS-08 and the Canadian Supplement (CSA A440S1-09) in many jurisdictions across Canada has brought big changes to the way we grade and label our windows and doors. Fenestration Canada has released a Performance Calculator Tool to assist you in finding the requirements for your projects.

This calculator is meant to be used as a guideline only, and does not necessarily reflect a totally accurate picture of the requirements you may need. Please consult a JELD-WEN dealer or representative to determine the exact requirements for specific projects.

What is NAFS?

NAFS-08 is a newer fenestration standard that addresses the performance and quality requirements of windows and doors. It serves to harmonize Canadian and American standards. In Canada, NAFS-08 must be used in conjunction with the Canadian Supplement CSA A440S1-09.

The biggest changes are to product labeling requirements and how product performance is rated. Further information about NAFS-08 and what it means to you can be obtained from your authorized JELD-WEN dealer or sales representative.

Where Does It Apply?

As of March 1st, 2014, the status of NAFS requirements across the country is as follows:

  • British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Yukon, Northwest Territory and the City of Moncton, NB: NAFS-08 and CSA A440S1-09 are required for all installations.
  • Ontario: NAFS-08 and CSA A440S1-09 are required for all installations with building permits issued after January 1, 2014. If the building permit was issued before January 1, 2014, the older standards apply, provided ground is broken on the job within 3 to 6 months of the date of issue of the permit, this time frame will be defined by the local building officials.
  • PEI and Newfoundland: implemented code which includes NAFS 08 but are not currently enforcing it.
  • Nunavut: does not have a building code act in place, but any federally funded projects will have to meet the National Building Code of Canada 2010, and NAFS-08 and CSA A440S1-09 requirements.
  • Alberta, Quebec, and New Brunswick: are all working with older codes and standards.
