Replacing Windows

Depending on the location, new windows can increase your home’s value and energy savings. In fact, according to ENERGY STAR®, replacing old windows with new ENERGY STAR qualified models yields between 7 and 15 percent annual savings on household energy bills.

Whether you’re planning for new construction, historic renovation, or remodeling, we have windows to fit the project requirements. The majority of JELD-WEN windows can be used for remodeling projects, and we also have specific products available that are designed for true replacements, such as pocket windows or double-hung sash replacement kits.

When it comes to windows, the choices are nearly endless. Because windows can make a significant impact on the overall style, comfort, and energy efficiency of your home, it’s important to consider the following factors.

Material Matters

Consider the architecture of your home when choosing a coordinating window material.

  • Clad-Wood – Low-maintenance exterior metal cladding is like a coat of armor for extra protection from the elements. These windows feature beautiful wood inside your home with protective metal cladding outside. The baked-on finish is durable, easy to care for and available in a variety of popular colors.
  • Wood – With wood windows, you’ll get the beauty of natural wood interiors and exteriors without the worry of wood rot. These windows are easy to care for while offering design freedom to stain, clear coat, or paint to get the exact look you want.
  • Vinyl – Vinyl is recognized for being remarkably durable to give you years of energy-efficient performance. There are also ample design options to boost your home’s character.

Design Details

  • Colour options – Add excitement to your windows with a range of beautiful colors. Designed to accentuate your home’s visual appeal, including exterior finishes and interior furnishings, colors are available in clad-wood, vinyl, and aluminum windows.
  • Hardware – It’s easy to complement your existing décor with our variety of hardware finishes.
  • SDLGBG
Grilles – Grilles (also called grids) are the decorative pieces that divide the window into panes. Many homeowners include grilles with their windows to accent the architecture of their homes. Common types of grilles include simulated divided lites (SDL), which give the illusion of a true divided lite window because the grilles adhere to the surface of the glass; and grilles between the glass (GBG) where the grille bars are sandwiched between the panes of glass. GBGs are a more economical option and minimize cleaning. Other options include full surround removable grilles (wood windows only) and grilles in different profiles and bar widths.
  • Glass options – The glass you select for your windows can add both style and performance benefits. Impact-resistant glass will provide protection against hurricane-force winds and intruders. Low-E glass will provide energy efficiency benefits and protection against UV fading. Decorative and textured glass provide varying degrees of privacy and add charm.

Window Operator Types

Casement, awning, single-hung, double-hung, and sliding are window types. See how these operate: Fixed windows don’t open and are available in many geometric and radius shapes. When choosing a window type, consider the architectural style of your home as well as performance features and the amount of ventilation required. For example, a casement window allows for maximum airflow while a sliding window limits the airflow to one half of the window. Double-hung or single-hung windows with the tilt-in feature allow for easy cleaning.

Measuring and Installing

Once you have selected your window type and material, make sure you get the perfect fit by properly measuring. First, you’ll need to determine if the rough opening or existing window frames are square, level, and plumb. Then measure for the type of project you’re working on.
